hoc qualecunque monumentum non sinat nostram necessitudinem
intermori. Quod equidem ita assecuturum me confido, quum propter
natiuam tuam humanitatem ac vetus in me studium, tum etiam
quod hac lucubratiuncula tuo satisfaciam desyderio, qui iam olim (vt
mihi Dorpius noster narrauit) summopere expetas sententias probati
cuiuspiam auctoris ita expoliri vt et animos adulescentum ad virtutes
et linguas ad rectam eloquutionem forment ; quorum vtrumque nisi
heae Catonis ac Publianae Septemque Sapientum sic castigatae atque
elucidatae faciant, nullae faciant. Bene vale.

299.., To ANDREW OF HOOGSTRAETEN.
Epistolae ad diuersos p. 473. Liége.
HN: Lond. xii. 8: LB. 296. (August 1514.)
[A younger branch of the Borsselen family (cf. Epp. 80 and 93 introd.)
acquired the lordship of Hoogstraeten in 1437 (Stokvis iii. 10, geneal. 10, 16);
so that Erasmus’ ancient friendship with this Andrew, who was perhaps a
dependant on the same footing as Peter of Courtebourne (Ep. 169), may have
dated back to the Tournehem days. |

placuit vt a nulla vnquam discesserim lubentius. Bene vale.

Tlustrium virorum epistolae f°. së. v°. (a). (Basle.)
RE. 190. (August 1514.)
[This letter and Epp. 324, 457, 471 are included in Tllustrium virorum epistolae,
Hebraicae, Graecae et Latinae, ad Toannem Reuchlin Phorcensem, Hagenau, Anshelm,
May 1510, but were never reprinted by Erasmus. The volume is an album of
letters, the first part of which, published by Anshelm at Tübingen in March
1514, Was intended to show that Reuchlin had the support of the learned
world in his controversy with Pfefferkorn on behalf of Hebrew learning; the
second.part, to which these letters belong, testifies the general satisfaction at
the Spires decision (Ep. 290) and the encouragement shown to Reuchlin in the
later stages of the contest. See RE. pp. 2,3.
