320 | FROM JOHN BECAR OF BORSSELEN 45 simum; cupio enim omnes emere, vt modo dixi, quotquot isthic emisisti in publicum. Tuus Ioannes Becar Borsalus. - 50 Si quis alius Erasmo absente, illius nominis et eruditionis amator + atque obseruator, hanc epistolam resignauerit, id quod iussi fieri in superscriptione, hunc oro vt ob communem mihi secum Erasmi amorem paucis rescribat, fungaturque in hoc negocio Erasmi nostri officio ; cui si ignotus et longe absens nullam gratiam referre potero, 55 maximam tamen semper habebo et agam. 321. From HENRY BEBEL. Deventer MS. 91, f. 172. Tübingen. LB. App. 19. 20 January 1515. [The manuscript date may be accepted, since the tone of the letter accords well with Erasmus’ first visit to Basle; and 1516 would be lengthening the interval denoted by nuper (1. 1) to between two and three years. Henry Bebel (1472-1518) of Justingen, near Ulm, studied at Oracow and Basle (matric. 1495), and in 1497 was appointed to a Lecturership in poetry and rhetoric at Tubingen, where he remained for the rest of his life. He was an enthusiastic patriot, and delivered before Maximilian an oration in praise of Germany, which in 1504 he expanded into a book. He was a considerable Latin scholar, and after receiving the poet’s laurel in 1501 he wrote Commentaria epistolarum conficiendarum, 1503, Ars Versificandi, 1506, Latinum idioma, 1509, De institutione puerorum, 1513, and other works; he was popularly known through a volume of Facetiae, published in 1506 by Griininger at Strasburg. Cym nuper falso rumore, vir doctissime, deceptus Beatus Rhenanus te e medio viuentium sublatum in quadam epistola euulgasset, dolui profecto vicem tuam, dolui [ob] communem litterarum et Germanicae laudis iacturam. Verum cum nunc intelligo te esse Basileae incolumem et bonas litteras gnauiter promouentem, gaudeo mirum in 5 modum; nec temperare mihi potui quin te litteris meis licet subrusticis salutarem, quem, vt loquar ex animi sententia et communi in Sueuia doctorum consensu, vnicum existimo cui in multiiuga eruditione, singulari quoque vtriusque linguae peritia, cedant omnium nunc viuentium ingenia; vt, non Germanos modo verumetiam @allos H © 821.
